Got Your Eye On An Office Co-worker?
Monster Worldwide commissioned a Valentine’s Day survey and this has revealed that although office romance is beneficial for happiness levels in our lifes, they might not be so good for our careers. That’s how the office workers that were surveyed feel anyway – 70% believe that a relationship with a co worker will be negatively affect their job security.
Less than half (48%) said that they would have actually have a relationship with a co-worker and 61% of the people questioned considered office relationships to be unprofessional due to the distractions that they could possibly cause during the working day.
A large proportion (46%) also felt that office relationships should be governed by rules installed by each employing company as many employees do not know if any restrictions are in place in regards to this in their workplace. One 1/3 of employees worry that dating a co-worker will result in being fired, particular during these harsh economic times when staff cut backs are often necessary.
Better pay no attention to the office intern you’ve got the hots for in the meantime, then!
The poll also concluded that only 1 in 10 of employees would ever consider a relationship with their boss. I like to think that this is a reflection of age issues (bosses tend to be much older) as opposed to outright fear.
With the long hours of office workers in mind, many may find themselves turning to online dating in order to locate love! But we need to consider; should men seeking women (and vice versa) be forced to look for their match away from the office environment?
I would argue that employers should be fine with 2 of their workers dating if the relationship did not be intrusive to their work. Those who are hard workers anyway are not likely to decline simply because they work within the same environment as their partner.
